Have you ever gotten to the gym and realized that you forgot to put on deodorant? You check your gym bag and holy dookie, you have no deodorant. Or worse, you ‘start’ when you’re at the gym and don’t have a tampon? Lord Jesus, help us. There are definitely some gym bag necessities that will help you keep your sanity.
I have had clients forget shoes, panties, entire outfits, their water, a snack, I mean. The list is endless.
Which caused me to think that it’s time to put together a quick little guide of gym bag necessities to keep your “oh crap” moments to a minimum.
Well, to be able to put these 10 gym bag necessities to use, you need a bag! Imagine that.
Sure, you can go grab any bag for a gym bag, but if you are stuffing it in a locker at the gym, you’re going to need one to withstand the scraping of the sides of the locker and the beat up sessions you’re going to be putting it through.
Here is my gym bag. Yep, this is my actual gym bag and I love it. I’ve had it for aaaabbboouuutt…. Let’s see…
Almost two years now. At least a year and a half. I don’t keep track, but I’ve totally had it a minute.
I shove this thing in and yank it out of a locker at the gym several times a week and she’s still going strong. She’s had some water spills and some energy drink spills to endure. As well as melted protein bars and mashed peanut butter and crackers.
GUESS WHAT? SHE WIPED RIGHT UP.
I took a wet rag to her and cleaned her out after those mishaps and voila. She’s ready to roll again.

Now that you have a gym bag, let’s take a gander at what to actually put in said gym bag. I have about 10 things that are my gym bag essentials.
GYM BAG NECESSITIES #1 – DEODORANT
Other than the fact that I’m super paranoid about smelling; I’m pretty sure this one goes without saying as to why this is in there.
Believe me. Deo is a must. Okay? I don’t care if you put it on last week or yesterday. Put it on again today.
Okay. Done with that. ?
GYM BAG NECESSITIES # 2 -WATER
Next is water. I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a great water drinker. Meaning that I will have to drink more water at once because I don’t space it out during the day and then I’ll realize I’m getting dehydrated.
Have your water bottle and then actually drink your water! It doesn’t do you any good if it just sits in your bag so carry it with you! It’s a good reminder.
During your workout, even if you don’t feel thirsty, your body will kick in and realize hey you are thirsty, so keep up with it. Your body will thank you for it.
GYM BAG NECESSITIES #3 – A SNACK
While this might seem a little odd, it’s actually a big deal. Sometimes during my workouts, my blood sugar will all of the sudden plummet and I can feel it.
This is why I typically carry a fruit of some kind. I’ll grab a bite and then move on with my workout.
I’m not a diabetic nor am I giving diabetic advice. However, as a mesomorph, my metabolism is really efficient and this can cause drops in my blood sugar.
GYM BAG NECESSITIES #4 – GUM
Giiiiiiirrrrllll. I love me some gum. I’m obsessed. All the different minty flavors and all that jazz.
Here’s another fun fact; I’m super paranoid about having unpleasant breath. When I’m coaching my folks, I’m typically in their personal space with cuing and explaining, so I need that breath to be minty fresh.
Plus, when I’m working out, chewing something keeps my focused.
GYM BAG NECESSITIES #5 – WEIGHT BELT
I’m super big on safety. Personally, I don’t think there’s a certain lifting weight you need to be reaching before it’s “worthy” of wearing a lifting belt.
Heavy is relevant to the person and is different weights for different people.
Anytime I’m lifting over 100#, whether it’s squats or deadlifts, I’m wearing that weight belt. It’s a paranoid safety thing as I’d much rather be safe than sorry even though my form is on point.
Don’t be afraid to wear a weight belt. Hey, The Rock wears a weight belt through his workouts. I’ve seen him doing tricep dips with a weight belt on.
He doesn’t have time for injuries and neither do you. So, if you want to wear a weight belt, don’t be afraid to do so!
GYM BAG NECESSITIES #6 – KNEE SLEEVES
These tie into the whole weight belt thing. I have knee sleeves in my bag simply for compression on my knees when I’m doing a heavy squat day.
I had surgery on my knee, so I personally like having that compression for those heavier squats.
GYM BAG NECESSITIES #7 – WRIST WRAPS
These are like the knee sleeves in that I don’t wear them all the time, they’re for stability for my wrists for when I’ve got front squats in my workout or pushups or things like that.
They really do help and I always have them in my bag, just in case.
GYM BAG NECESSITIES #8 – EXTRA EARBUDS
My personal preference for ear buds is wireless, but sometimes I forget to charge said earbuds so I always keep my wired earbuds in my bag just in case.
Because nothing ruins a workout quite like not having your music to keep you pumped up. Isn’t that right? Gotta have that music.
GYM BAG NECESSITIES # 9 – TAMPONS
Let’s say you’re rocking along through your workout and all the sudden, literally out of nowhere… here comes your Aunt Flow.
And you’ve got nothing.
So, you very nonchalantly start walking towards getting your kiddos praaayyyiiiinnngggg that nothing shows through.
Let’s avoid that awkward situation shall we?
To avoid that, get a small little bag for your gym bag and throw in some tampons to avoid mishaps like that in the future.
GYM BAG NECESSITIES #10 – POST WORKOUT PROTEIN
Last but not least I have my protein powder and mixer ready to go for right after my workout.
Remember how I said my blood sugar drops? This helps with that as I can go ahead and start drinking it right away as soon as I’m done to start replenishing those muscles and getting that blood sugar back up.

Final tip – leave your gym bag packed. Don’t leave dirty clothes in there, but leave it packed and ready to go. When you get home, put a snack back in your bag to replace the one that you ate on the way home or at the gym.
