Confession – I am the worst when it comes to drinking enough water. Seriously though, I have a terrible time getting in enough water and by the time I actually feel thirsty, I’m SO thirsty that I tend to drink so much water it makes my belly hurt.
Talk about setting a great example for you, my readers, and my clients, amIright?
But seriously though, we’ve heard it once, we’ve heard it a million times. Drinking enough water is vital to our well-being and our health.
Did you know that there was a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise that that shows that even as little as 1% loss of your body mass can impair your cognitive performance? (Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise [2018;doi:10.1249/MSS .0000000000001682)
YOWZA. TALK ABOUT A BUMMER, RIGHT?
Because as mamas, we have to keep our minds in tip top shape, don’t we?
We have to be smarter than the 3 year old and the 1 year old. Because, 82% of parenting is calculating how to be smarter than your child. And that 82% is a cold hard fact that I totally made up in my head. #sarcasm
Point is, drinking enough water is super important to the body, because our bodies are made up of around 60% water.
Our basic needs to be healthy? Water, a bit of sun light, and some love. Basically we’re a complicated plant with emotions.
BUT HOW MUCH WATER DO WE NEED? NOT ONLY THAT, HOW CAN WE ENSURE THAT WE’RE GETTING ENOUGH WATER?
SO, HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD WE BE DRINKING?
Let’s not forget that I’m pretty bad about getting enough water. Let’s just get real for a minute. Sometimes I have to set myself reminders to drink water. Literal reminders on my phone to drink water.
Besides the obvious of keeping you hydrated; drinking enough water helps flush your body of toxins that it has been holding in and that’s just the beginning of all of the benefits of drinking enough water.
TYPICALLY, I TRY TO DRINK HALF OF MY BODY WEIGHT IN OUNCES.
And that’s in addition to my coffee! Yes, to answer your question, I have to pee a lot. But, it is what it is, right?
There is also the old saying that 8 cups of water is the best to place to start, and while that might be a good starting point, I strive to drink my body weight in ounces and recommend the same for my clients and readers. I feel better when I do
Here’s an example: if you weigh 130 pounds, typically you should be drinking around 65 ounces of water per day.
Yep. That simple.
Now, if you’re not used to drinking half your body weight in ounces of water per day, you will probably feel like you’re drowning a bit trying to get that much water down.
IF YOU’RE NOT DRINKING HALF YOUR BODY WEIGHT IN OUNCES IN WATER, START WITH 50(ISH) OUNCES OF WATER EVERYDAY FOR A WEEK.
Then start working your way up.
You will have to go to the restroom more, it’s just a fact of life, but hey, you had babies, so you’re probably already peeing more than you’d care to admit. ? #reallife
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FACT THAT DRINKING JUST WATER CAN SOMETIMES BE A BIT BORING?
I’ll admit it! Drinking water can be totally boring.
This is where I will typically add in fruits and or vegetables into my water to add some flavor to them.
When I was in Dallas for continuing education this past August, my parents were also in Dallas. But, I was heading home to my hubby and son while they were staying in Dallas for a few more days.
When I went to check out of the hotel, there was a large pitcher of water and my dad went over to that water to get a cup. When he came back, he said with the straightest face “Would you like to drink a salad?”
I started cracking up and looked over at the pitcher and they had put cucumbers and some sort of leafy green something inside the water.
Here’s me and my dad from the same trip. We’re a mess. But let’s get back to topic here.
LET’S JUST SAY, I’D RATHER EAT MY SALADS THAN DRINK THEM.
However! With the right mixture of fruits and a select few veggies, you can really spice up your water so that it is easier to drink.
CHECK OUT THESE THREE WATER ‘RECIPES’ THAT YOU CAN TRY OUT. COUPLE OF TIPS THOUGH BEFORE I SHARE:
- I highly recommend getting a cup that you love and don’t mind carrying it with you wherever you go! You may already have this, but you may not. I have found that having a boring glass doesn’t lead me to drinking enough water. Maybe it’s a mind thing or maybe I am 2 years old at heart. Who knows? Both are a possibility.
- Next, grab a pitcher that has a lid. Pitchers that have an open top take on the flavor in the air in the fridge which doesn’t make for very tasty water. To keep your fruits and veggies fresh, I recommend that you dump any extra water after 2-3 days.
OKAY! WATER RECIPES:
HOW’S THAT? BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THE STRUGGLE TO DRINKING ENOUGH WATER.
