Lightning bugs. Iced Tea. Swimming Pools. The Beach. Sunscreen. Boats. The Lake. Ohhhh summertime how I love thee. I love all the different couple summertime activities that can be done together.
Some of you might be thinking, isn’t this out of scope for a fitness blog? Well, yes and no. Work with me here. Leading a healthy and fit lifestyle requires strong and healthy relationships. While I am by no means a therapist or couple guru, or anything of the like, I do know that healthy relationships are good for you.
Every summer, I try to do at least one thing I’ve never done before. In the wintertime I’m too cold and cranky because it’s cold to really want to do anything out of the norm, but summertime? It’s on! Who cares that I’ve got sweat rolling down my back? That just means it’s time for iced coffee and iced tea! And tons of water to counteract that caffeine… Yikes.
Anyway! In doing some researching things for David and I to do this summer, I figured you girls would enjoy what I’ve found as well. So let’s get started!
Couple Summer Time Activities # 1 – Try new recipes that require the grill
Sometimes we can really get in a rut when it comes to our food. Believe me, I know. I’m the queen of cooking and meal prepping the same thing because it’s easy and then I’m so tired of that meal I end up hating it. Okay, maybe not hating it, but you get my point!
So here’s the date idea! Jump on Pinterest and (after you give me a follow) search “grill recipes” or “recipes using the grill”. There is all kinds of great recipes that are fun and that are healthy as well! I can promise you that you will fail a couple of recipes. It happens to the best of us! But I can also guarantee you that you will have a lot of fun with your spouse thinking outside the box and trying new things.
Couple Summer Time Activities # 2 – Find a place to star gaze
I know what you’re thinking… What are we twelve that we are going star gazing? Well, considering there’s nothing wrong with being 12 and I act 12 and awkward all the time, it works out. Living in a city where there are a lot of lights, you won’t see the billions of stars that are out there, so here is my suggestion; do some scoping and find a safe place that you guys can go out and either lay on a blanket on the ground and listen to the crickets while watching the stars or lay on the hood of the car.
If it sounds too adolescent for your taste, then maybe you should loosen up a little bit! There are some amazing conversations that happen when you get away from the norm and put your phones away. You’ll fall in love with him all over again, sis. Life gets too busy. Get out of your comfort zone and go look at the stars.
Couple Summer Time Activities # 3 – Try new restaurants for brunch that have patio seating
I love brunch. We don’t get to go very often because I typically have either a long run on Saturday mornings or weight lifting class. But! We love going to brunch. Especially a place with a patio that we can enjoy the cool morning air with a mimosa and/or coffee.
You can also take your brunch to the next level and order something that you’ve never ordered before! Branch out! Here’s an example: David and I went for brunch a few months ago when we were on a trip for his birthday. He ordered two things, but the one that sticks out in my mind is a bagel with sushi grade salmon with a cream cheese and chive mix for the spread.
Y’all. It was absolutely amazing. It was something I would have never made at home or even THOUGHT to put together! So! In the spirit of keeping things interesting and branching out of your comfort zone, order something at brunch that you wouldn’t normally give a go. You’ll surprise yourself at what you like.
Couple Summer Time Activities #4- Scope out different swim spots
There are so many different (and safe) places that you can swim! The internet is an amazing thing and guess what? A lot of folks have already done the research for you to find a cool place to cool off with the hubster.
Road Trippers put together a list of swimming holes around the US that you can check out! Some of the places may require a small road trip, but hey! That’s okay, you both have jobs, you guys give it a go. You only live once.
Couple Summer Time Activities # 5 – Enroll your dog in a training class
I know, I’m sure your dog is already trained. So why not enroll her in an advanced class? Take that sweet little love to an advanced class or even a class that specializes in teaching her tricks! David and I trained Izzy through the summer and we both had a really great time getting to do it together and learn how to better bond with her!
Couple Summer Time Activities # 6 – Go to the Zoo
Better yet, take a mini road trip to a big zoo that’s within driving distance. Zoos are not going out of style, in fact, they’re really stepping up their game!
There’s been a lot of talk about zoos mistreating their animals, so in the light of people bringing that to light, the zoos have really stepped up their game to make zoos not only more engaging but more of a home sweet home for the animals.
If you do have to hop in the car to go for a little drive, enjoy the drive together. Grab some coffee and talk about life. Where do you guys want to go in life, how things are really going at work and in your workouts and in your brain!
Which leads me to number seven…
Couple Summer Time Activities # 7 – Fill out a bucket list
As morbid as it sounds, none of us are getting any younger. Of course, nobody likes talking about death, but don’t worry, we’re not going to dwell. Here’s how to do this one. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write down as many things as you can possibly think of that you want to do before, well, you kick the bucket.
Think big, think HUGE! If it seems impossible, write it down!! Nothing is off limits. When the 10 minutes is up, then compare notes. Some of them you will giggle over and others you’ll think, wow, I never knew that about you. Then you’ll be amazed by him all over again.
Couple Summer Time Activities # 8 – Vacation
Last but definitely not least is to plan a vacation together. Take that bucket list and see where you put down you want to go. If you can’t afford any of those places right now, then print out a picture of that place, hang it on your mirror and start saving for it.
In the meantime, take a vacation you can afford and go live it up with your spouse. You both work so hard, you deserve to spend some time alone and away together.
I’m ready to go on a date!
Which one do you want to do first? I know for me, I’ll be getting out of my comfort zone and finding a place that David and I can go look at some stars. After that, we’ll be creating a bucket list together.
Here’s the deal. This post may seem out of scope for my blog but in actuality, it’s really not. Part of healthy living is balancing your relationships and real life.
It’s a reminder that there’s more to life than remembering to get your workouts in and cutting your run time down and prepping all of your meals. Those are important! But it’s not the only thing a healthy life is about.
Remember this summer as you are thinking of things to do, to put your phone away and shut off the TV and go do something together; because one day, you won’t be able to.
Make this time in your life so unforgettable that when you’re old and gray and you’re sitting on your back porch drinking your iced tea watching the fire flies, you remember the hot summers full of memories and adventures and you can look at each other and say:
“We lived well”
