I don’t know about you but there are few things worse than skin that is so dry that all you want to do is scratch. Then it’s like, because you’re itching it just gets worse. Dry winter skin is absolutely maddening.
To be honest, I’ve struggled with dry skin, all year long for most of my life. When I played ball growing up, in the winter games, my skin would be crazy itchy!
My mom and I went through lots of products to figure out how to keep my skin hydrated and keep it from itching so badly. Sometimes my hands would even crack! Which made for tender hands catching a basketball!
Now, believe me when I say I’m not trying to tell a sob story, I’m saying this to let you know that I really do understand dry winter skin and what I’m about to tell you isn’t just some weird post of me throwing out products to try to make a few dollars.
I simply know how hard it is to deal with dry winter skin and here are a few things that help me out! So here we go. Let’s get started, shall we?
Fixing Dry Winter Skin Tip #1 -Moisturizing Body Wash
Let’s start with my favorite body wash. It’s by OGX and it has Argon Oil added into it. Which, if you have dry hair, you can actually put Argon oil in your hair to get the frizz out- but that’s another story.
This body wash is the ultra-hydrating body wash that I use each time I get in the shower and I also use it in the summer months as well!
The OGX products do not leave a residue on my skin nor on the tile in my shower. Which means that it doesn’t plug up the pours in my skin!
Plus, it smells great and it’s not this overpowering flowery smell, it’s a clean and fresh smell that won’t interfere with your perfume.
You can grab a double pack on Amazon for about $18 which is a really great price for a natural and quality product.
Fixing Dry Winter Skin Tip #2 – Moisturizer
Okay! Moving on to my favorite moisturizer. Let’s be honest, putting on moisturizer after every single shower can be a bit obnoxious; but, now that I have found a lotion that isn’t sticky, or takes forever to dry it really isn’t that bad.
There is actually a lotion that is fantastic that is called Amir Touch of Tan Moisturizer with Argon that is fantastic. Can you tell that I like Argon oil, yet?
Now, you might be thinking, touch of tan? Won’t that turn you orange?
Short answer is no. I can say this confidently because my skin is the worst in picking up tanners and turning them orange and this touch of tan does not turn me orange.
Seriously though, I have been through some self-tanners in my time and I have been literally in the bath tub trying to scrub some stuff off.
But not with this touch of tan moisturizer. I love that it’s not sticky, it’s dry within a few minutes, that it doesn’t turn me orange, and that the price is super affordable.
This lotion lasts me about a month and you can grab it here on Amazon for about $13!
Sometimes my hands end up cracking because I wash my hands so much and in that case of such bad dry skin, I use Burt’s Bee’s Hand Salve.
Fixing Dry Winter Skin Tip #3 – Hydration
Last but actually the most important is hydration. To keep your skin healthy, soft, and moist requires that your skin be hydrated from the inside out.
If you’re only applying the external piece then you’re really only putting a bandage on the situation and you’re not addressing the problem.
Hydration is super important. Both in the summer months and the winter months. Hydration is a year long daily process and to be honest with you, I’m one of the worst with it!
I have to set a reminder on my phone for every two hours to drink two cups of water at a time. That is a true story with no exaggeration.
If I do not keep my hydration up, my skin is so dry that it almost feels like it could crack. Well, in actuality, like I said above, it does crack!
So, if I don’t keep my water up, then it makes things even worse.
Here are a couple of tips to making sure that you get enough water:
- Spice up your water by adding some fruit to it
- Grab a cup you like to drink out of – sounds dorky right? Trust me, it works.
- Set a reminder on your phone to go off in certain increments to drink your water
Remember, 64 ounces of water is where you want to start. I typically recommend to my girls that you work up to your body weight in ounces of water.
Don’t just do that much water all at once, you do have to work your way up to it because that is a lot of water!
You’re a smart girl, you know what to do and how to listen to your body.
So, winter is coming…
That’s from something isn’t it? I wouldn’t know, I watch weird history documentaries and old sitcoms when I have a minute to actually watch tv.
But anywho, I really hope that this will help you out this winter. I really can’t stress enough the hydration piece. Because you can hydrate the outside all you want, but if you’re not hydrating from the inside out, then you’re missing a huge piece of the puzzle.
Hydration from lots of water is actually not something that people think about a whole lot, but it actually will make a big difference.
