Don’t be this girl- “Oh no, I can’t eat that, I haven’t had a cookie since 2005.” Well, stinking good for you. The rest of us mortals had 2 cookies with lunch and we still fit into our shorts, so who is the real winner, here? 🙂 I am all about being kind to others but I’m telling you right now that my snarky side has come out quicker than you can rip a Band-Aid off of your husband’s arm when girls have said things like that to me. The Extreme Dieting that is going around right now, truly boggles my mind. These extreme diets make you miserable, cranky, and sad. I mean, let’s just be real here. Nobody wins from an extreme diet and that includes the people around you.
So, how do you get results quicker?
Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but working your way to your ideal body and keeping your ideal body is a slow and steady process. You can’t go on a diet for 3 weeks then jump back to old habits on day 22 and expect to keep results. Nope! Doesn’t work that way.
But wait, does that mean I have to live without carbs the rest of my life? Or never have dessert again?
Of Course not.
Here’s a newsflash
You also don’t have to punish yourself in the gym after you’ve had a treat. Coach G. said what???
Yep, you heard me. Healthy lifestyles and healthy bodies are not about being extreme, it’s about making good small decisions, every single day and being consistent.
According to Business Insider – 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February That’s an insane number! We all know the joke right? “If you think the gym is too full just wait until February”. There’s actually some truism to that joke. People get all excited and try to make WAY too many changes all at once and then they get discouraged and drop off. Instead of making those small consistent choices every single day.
But how does healthy living become a habit and not just something you do for a month or four months then fall off?
For starters, before you do anything else, you have to decide to take charge of your life and the situation. You decide what YOU want to accomplish and get after it. Which, if you’re still reading this, you’ve already done. My guess is that you’ve almost reached your target weight and you’re ready to learn how to keep this momentum going for maintenance purposes and really change your life for the better. You’ve got big plans for yourself!
Here are my two things that will help you be consistent over the long haul and not be extreme. Being extreme can lead to failure which leads to discouragement, which can lead to being right back where you started. And Sister, I just don’t want you to go there!
No Extreme Dieting Here -Small Steps lead to BIG results.
I personally have gone through a weight loss journey of over 60+ pounds which you can see in my picture. You can read more about that in about me page if you’d like. But I often get asked, how did you do it? What diet did you use? Did you just run? How have you been able to keep it off?
My answer is really simple.
Small and consistent decisions every single day and the two biggest of my small decisions that I made every day surrounded my food and my workouts. The truth around my overall diet isn’t some big scientific experiment that is ground breaking news. It’s logical and the concept is as old as time itself.
And guess what? I didn’t measure my food either. I ate when I was hungry, and stopped eating when I was full. When I eat, I slow down and enjoy it. Scarfing down our food can cause overeating because our brain cannot catch up with our stomachs fast enough.
It was a learning process of what foods are the right balance for my body. My daily eating consists of meats, veggies, fruits, some dairy, whole grains, and minimal sugar. Label reading and keeping my shopping to the outer edge of the store where the perishable food items are is a key part of the process. Which is coupled with meal prepping as many meals and snacks as possible for the week so that way it makes good food choices easy.
What about treats?
Do I have the occasional pizza? You betcha. How about a scoop of ice cream every now and then? Of course! What I DON’T do, is punish myself in the gym after I’ve had a treat. By allowing myself those small treats every now and then, it has helped me to not binge later. Ultimate depravity can lead to crazy binging for most people. Remember to have a great balance.
The second of daily decisions is surrounding my workouts
I alternate days between runs, CrossFit classes, and rest. At the beginning of the week, I decide what days will be rest, which days will be run and which days will be CrossFit and go with it. Biggest thing? One day at a time, one week at a time.
You’ll also notice that I plan in rest days. Rest days are so important. . Rest, Relax, Renew, Recover-they’re as important as your workouts.
In addition to your workouts, adding in extra movement into your day can make a big difference as well. Extra movement gets that heart rate up a bit and it helps wake up your mind as well. Bottom line? Keep moving! I’m not talking extreme workouts twice a day, I’m talking about getting up out of your seat and move around. Small steps, remember?
Feeling better yet?
What I mean is, are you feeling more relaxed about the fact that you don’t have to be so dang hard on yourself?
Here’s the deal. Life is way too short to live counting every single calorie. Be aware of what you put in your body vs. being afraid of what you put in there. There’s a huge difference and life is just way too short to live in fear. Keep your food clean, your workouts dirty and you’ll be fine!
Finding your balance of career, home life, good food, killer workouts, and a social life of some sort can be quite overwhelming. I am a firm believer in being comfortable in your own skin, but also always on the lookout of how we can better ourselves. This doesn’t mean yo-yo diets and crazy juice cleanses. This means small changes and decisions in the right direction every single day. Self-improvement and the journey of healthy living is such a beautiful path but it can be messy. Being too hard on yourself can make the path even messier.
Body shaming yourself can be an easy trap to fall into, but just don’t do it! There are going to be days that you feel like you’ve failed and that you’re just not getting anywhere. Remember that results don’t all happen at once and that small changes lead to BIG results.
Small changes, every single day will lead to results. Will you become a size two? Probably not, but that’s not what you’re going for anyway, right? You want to be healthy and strong. Your life is one worth living; the weight will come off and you will feel better, less tired, plus your mirror and clothes will start showing results as well.
Stop counting calories and depriving yourself of things. Start living well by eating clean and training dirty.
Your future [and present] self will thank you for it.
