Has anyone ever commented on how great your hair looks and you know they’re lying? You’re like, seriously? If you think this looks good, you should see what happens when I actually care. You’ll get your socks knocked off. Hair care for fitness girls can be a bit different than for those that don’t workout on a regular basis.
Anybody ever feel lost in the hair care section? It can be a maze of products ranging from stupidly expensive to way cheap. Plus, how do you ever know which ones are good or not without going through the process of experimenting?
Never fear! Amber is here. I have done the experimenting for you and guess what? None of them are the same brand AND they’re super affordable AND you can get them all on Amazon.
Can I get a Hallelujah and an Amen? Yaaaasssss.
Hair Care Tricks for Fitness Girls #1 – Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo
Having tried just about every dry shampoo I could find, ranging from $3 to $21 I think that it is fair to say that I am the queen of dry shampoo. I have been known to take my dry shampooing shenanigans to an unhealthy level if ya know what I mean. It’s bad.
However! Dry shampoo can be a lifesaver.
Here’s the deal, you get up, go to the gym early before work and your hair is right on the edge. It needs to be washed, but you MIGHT be able to get away with going to work with it like it is. Plus, you’re really not mentally prepared to wash and dry and fix your hair. I get it.
Enter dry shampoo.
You spray this at your roots, let it sit for maybe two minutes, brush out, and you’re ready to roll. Yes, it’s that simple, I’m totally not joking.
Pro-tip: If I get back from a workout and I know that dry shampoo will tame my mane, I will spray on my dry shampoo, put on my shower cap and let it sit through my shower. It really lets the dry shampoo sit and it just seems to do better.
Like I said, I’ve tried many different brands of dry shampoo and my favorite is Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo. Thankfully my dry shampoo habit doesn’t come at a high cost! You can grab it on Amazon for around $12 for a twin pack!
Hair Care Tricks for Fitness Girls #2- Ouchless Elastic Styling Accessories Pony Tail Holder
We fitness gals spend a lot of time with our hair tied in an obscene pineapple on top of our heads. This means that your hair takes quite a beating over the course of a week and your ties have to be good hair ties that will not rip up your hair. Especially you with the color treated hair. Yep, you! And me too 🙂
To be honest, I don’t think this one takes much explaining, I won’t bore you with talking about how great a hair tie is. These however are my favorite. Ouchless Elastic Styling Accessories Pony Tail Holder Ribbon Bands – By Kenz Laurenz. It claims it doesn’t “leave a crease” but it totally does. However! I haven’t had any broken hair since using this which is the most important thing anyway, right? You can grab a pack of twenty for $6!
Hair Care Tricks for Fitness Girls #3 – Cricket Static Free Sculpting 680
My hair is the worst when it comes to tangles. It’s super thick but the hair strands themselves are really fine, which equates to big tangles and knots. When I was a little girl, my mom had to basically do a mix of “big girl” conditioner because that was the only thing that worked on my hair so it didn’t rip!
When we workout, our hair gets wet, tangled, and a matted. Then if we leave it in our pineapples on top of our heads for any amount of time, it just makes the tangles way worse and can literally cause your hair to rip when you try to brush out the tangles.
Translation- You need a good type of conditioner (which we will get to in a second) and a good brush. Not all brushes are created equal. This Cricket Static Free Sculpting 680 brush is the one that I have had forever that was recommended by my hairdresser. It really reaches in my hair and works out the tangles without ripping my hair to shreds.
Keep in mind that yanking a brush through your hair will rip it no matter what brush it is, so with good strokes and this good brush, you’ll be all set. The Cricket Static Free Brush is around $6.50!
Hair Care Tricks for Fitness Girls #4 – It’s a 10 Miracle Hair Mask
Now that we’ve got our brush, let’s talk about conditioning our hair.
When we’re in the gym, we sweat like crazy. And, side note, if you’re not sweating, you’re not doing it right, so go get one of my Instant Download training plans and get to sweating!
Anyway! When we’re in the gym, we’re sweating like crazy girls which means that there is a lot of salt on our scalp. Salt can be very drying. When I don’t shower within an hour or two of leaving the gym, my skin is itching like CRAZY from the salt from the dried sweat just sitting on my skin. How’s that for a good mental image? You’re welcome.
I’ve also noticed that when I’m at the beach, my hair requires a bit more TLC because of that salt water. More proof that salt can be drying for our tender scalps.
Since salt dries our hair out, this is where I found this hair mask from It’s a 10. I absolutely love it. In fact, I don’t even have regular conditioner anymore because 1. This is not expensive and 2. I wash my hair 3 days a week and dry shampoo on the other days.
This has made an incredible difference in my hair. It has Vitamin E in it with Almond oil and it really detangles my hair. I’ve had several compliments on my hair of how healthy it looks even with all the crazy colors I’ve put in it and my hair being a constant platinum.
Believe me, if this works for my hair, it’ll work for yours too.
Hair Care Tricks for Fitness Girls #5 – Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Spray
On the days that I wash my hair with real shampoo (for inquiring minds, I use Redken Blonde Idol-Sulfate Free Shampoo), I have to mentally prepare myself for the process of blow drying. It takes forever, plus I either run a straightener over it or I take a hot wand to it to give it some curl. That being said, it takes a lot of heat. No pun intended, actually!
Especially us color treated gals, our hair needs a lot of love. The Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Spray is amazing. I’ve tried several different kinds of heat resistance spray and this one is my all-time favorite. Others have actually made my hair look dirty again, but this one is super light and it actually helped speed up the blow-dry time believe it or not.
If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen my hairdresser in my stories while I’m getting my hair done. She is awesome and always keeps up with the latest and greatest. This is what she uses on my hair as well when I’m sitting in her chair. You can grab it on Amazon for around $20. Which is not bad at ALL for salon brand product!
Am I the only one feeling the need for a spa day?
Girl, I am telling you, talking about all the hair care stuff makes me want to go for a spa day and get my hair done. I know that I’m not the only one.
Here’s the deal. I want you to know that I never promote anything that I haven’t tried myself or that I completely believe in the brand. Each of these products I personally use and they work so well for me I wanted to share with you.
We have to take care of our bodies and our body’s accessories, not the least of which is our hair. We keep our hair tied up, we blow dry it, we straighten it, curl it, dye it…. What else am I missing? It’s a wonder it doesn’t just fall out of our head in chunks!
Anybody else love the clearance rack? Think of these products as the clearance rack in a boutique. Quality products that are actually affordable.
It’s time to tame the mane, sis!
