Are you in a bit of a running rut? Or perhaps you’re brand new to running and you’re not sure where to start? Don’t stress! I got your back. This post will be a very short bit to help you give you a jump start on your running. I go into more detail on this in my popular eBook from Walker to Marathoner which you can grab here if you’d like. But before that, let’s dive in, shall we?
Sometimes we get in a rut and we need to change up our workout routines, right? Sometimes, we even have burn out and we need to step back and take a break for a couple of weeks and regroup.
I’ve found that these 5 tricks have really helped my girls get rolling on their running routine consistently.
How to Start Running Trick # 1 – Shoes, Shoes, SHOES!
A girl needs a good pair of running shoes, there’s no doubt about it.
I hear a lot from girls that running ‘hurts’. One of two things are probably hurting. Either they don’t have a decent bra and *ahem* ‘the girls’ are hurting, or it’s back/leg pain.
First question that I ask in that situation is, “How old are your shoes?”. To which the typical response is “Oh they’re 2-3 years old.”
Without good shoes, your feet do not get the proper support that they need to be able to handle the beating that they take while running. This is especially true when it comes to long distances.
If you’re wearing old worn out shoes or if those shoes are not specifically meant for running, you will be hurting and I’m not talking muscle soreness.
I’m talking pain in joints and other parts of the body. This is because your feet take the full impact of your body weight each time you take a stride in your runs and that get hard on the ‘ol feet!
Over the years of my running, I have gone through quite a number shoes and all kinds of brands. These brands range from no-name brands to big brand names and not one of them is made the same.
Reebok Harmony Roads are my absolute favorite. While they aren’t what I’d call ‘super cool’ looking, the cushion they have in them coupled with the support of the foot from the heel to the toe is next to none.
How to Start Running Trick #2 – Find a Training Plan
A lot of girls will get on places like Pinterest and they will just grab a free half marathon download from a graphic or from a random website.
This is so dangerous!
Where did this plan come from? Who made it? Are they qualified to make such a plan? How do you know that they didn’t just copy somebody else’s plan that definitely wasn’t qualified to make it?
They need to be a certified coach (such as myself) to ensure that the progression is at a good speed, etc.
Which leads me to my freebie. Throw in your email and I will send you how to go from a walker to a runner in 6 weeks!
How to Start Running Trick #3 – Find an accountability Partner
They do not have to be a running buddy. It could just be someone who’s working towards that healthy lifestyle like you are!
An accountability partner will ask you if you’ve ran that morning or if you plan to run that evening. It keeps you on track plus having a buddy working towards similar goals helps get you through the hard days! I really stand by this statement.
If you do decide to have an accountability partner and you plan to run together – my suggestion is that new runners not run with experienced runners at the very beginning. Once you get your stride and you know what your average pace will be, then try to find experienced runners to go with because they will push you but in a good way!
How to Start Running Trick # 4 – Eat all the Food!
Okay, maybe not all of the food. However, one thing that you will notice with being a new runner is that your appetite is on FIRE. You will want to eat everything in sight. This is actually a GOOD thing. Why? Because it means that you’re burning those calories and revving up that metabolism!
How to Start Running Trick # 5 – Sign up for a 5K
Oh yeah, I went there; sign your bad self up for a 5K. Why? Because it gives you something to work towards. It gives you a GOAL that includes a deadline. How about a color run? Click here to see if there are any color runs headed to your area!
