How many times have we heard that “abs are made in the kitchen”? I’ll be honest, before I actually knew what it meant, I was totally annoyed by the idea that abs were made in the kitchen. What does that even mean? I wanted a flat tummy and I wanted it yesterday.
So how do you get a flatter tummy?
Well, to be quite honest with you, the road to a flatter stomach really does start in the kitchen. However, the kitchen is not the only place that flatter stomachs are made: the gym (or wherever you workout) and the kitchen.
Here’s how I will lay this post out. We will talk about the two places, and how to easily utilize those two places to get you on the road to a flat tummy. I promise that these will not only be easy steps but they will be steps that you can incorporate into your daily schedule. Plus, when you make it all the way to the end, I will give you my top 6 core strengthening exercises that you can do in 6 minutes.
Let’s Start in the Kitchen
Guess what the number one destroyer of abs is? SUGAR. You would not BELIEVE what has added sugar in it. Things that are naturally sweet get sugar added to them! Growing up I always saw my mom read labels and she taught me to do the same. However, for the first few years out of the house, I didn’t care so much. Fast forward to when I started reading labels again and I found sugar in dang near everything.
There is so much science that goes into why sugar messes up everything. It slows metabolism, messes up your sleep, turns into fat, etc. What’s crazy is that our society has an addiction to sugar and we don’t even realize it!
So, I’m about to tell you the number one secret to flat abs. Are you ready? You’re so ready I can tell.
Check out what is actually in your food. Reading food labels is the one game changer that can take your ab game to the next level.
Anybody ever read a food label and come across a word (or 12 words) that looks like this? Rfalkwjfvl and you think what the heck is that? Yep, nobody knows except the scientist that made it up somewhere in the lab for nobody knows what reason. Look for ingredients you can pronounce and know what those ingredients are. Natural and Organic ingredients are the way to go. Cutting added sugar out of your diet, even simply cutting back on the added sugar you will be amazed at the difference in your stomach.
Remember! If you’re buying a yummy steak, the ingredients need to be minimal and the number one ingredient should be – shocker- STEAK! Or if you’re getting a bag of rice to cook, number one ingredient should be RICE. I know this one seems so trivial and obvious, but I guarantee you that if you go look in your cabinet or fridge/freezer you will be stunned at what you find in there!
When in doubt, grab the fresh stuff. Yes, it goes bad quicker but that is the point! I make a trip to the grocery store once a week because that is all the longer our produce will last. Meat is frozen as soon as it gets home unless I am cooking it that night because the preservatives on it are minimal!
Here’s a great example of why fresh is best, y’all. Need help on how to eat healthy? Check out my other post, How to Make Healthy Eating not Boring!
Or you can grab this cookbook on Amazon I’ve talked about before for healthy eating recipes that don’t take 3 days to cook!
David and I started meal prepping once a week and it has really made a difference for us! We find recipes that are good warmed up and we cook everything ahead of time and then we have all of our meals for the week. It has really helped because we have healthy well balanced meals ready for us in the fridge ready to roll.
Now you may not be able to meal prep once a week, maybe you can only meal prep once a month. That’s okay! Throw your extra meals in the freezer and they’ll be ready to roll when you are.
I recommend that you be extremely cautious about websites that claim a 24 hour cleanse by drinking a concoction of unicorn hair and olive oil. Those types of crash cleanses can cause more harm that good. Really work towards having an over all healthy lifestyle and making good healthy food choices every single day. With this type of living, it makes it so that you do not feel like you have to do these crash cleanses or extreme diets. Remember, healthy living is not about eating boiled chicken and raw kale all of the time. There’s so much more to it than that!
Moving on to Workouts
Something that I tell my clients is that a strong core is the basis for the rest of your body. It’s scientifically proven and it’s what we’re taught as personal trainers. When I personally train my clients whether local or virtual, we always make sure that the core is part of the workout.
When you’re working out, always always always ALWAYS keep your core nice and tight. This does not mean suck in your tummy and hold your breath. This means to engage your core muscles. Here’s how you do that, start at your pelvic floor and work your way up to your rib cage of ‘zipping’ those muscles together. You’re pulling those muscles towards the mid-line of your stomach and not just sucking your stomach in towards your spine.
That movement is also an exercise you can do during everyday life! Work to build up that core.
Another word on workouts…
Also remember that there are WAY more ab workouts than crunches. Your ab muscles wrap around the side of your trunk as well and working on those obliques are a major part of having a flat tummy. Make abs part of your everyday gym or workout routine. If you don’t go to the gym and you do something like martial arts or something of that sort, work specifically on your abs at home. Not that martial arts don’t work on your core because they absolutely do, but doing a quick ab workout at home that takes maybe 5-10 minutes will up your game and speed your way to flat abs.
Now for your freebie…
I think you should know that when you subscribe to my newsletter I take very seriously that you would share that information with me and I promise to never spam you and only send you the best stuff.
These 6 exercises are part of my normal routine and I mix them into most of my clients workouts as well!
One last thing- remember that your worth is not defined by a number on the scale or how your pants fit. It’s just not. Work towards solid core strength and you will be well on your way to success, sister.
