I love movies. Period. I love them. Movies are like visual books that take you to a world that is not your own and you can be transported into another time, place, or even universe. I really like all types of movies except horror or weird gory bloody movies. Those are absolutely not my taste. Because I love movies and I’m sure you do too, I came up with this list of 14 movies that empower women.
Each of these movies touched me either personally where I could relate to the character, or shed some light on areas that I really hadn’t considered before and made me want to stand up and cheer for these women.
Quick story time…
Over the past few months, I have done a bit of an overhaul on this blog. When I first started the blog in 2017, it was strictly about running, then in 2018, it morphed into running and fitness, and now, as my lifestyle posts have done so well, and you, my readers are wanting to know more about healthy living as a whole and not just fitness related; I’m focusing on a more general approach to healthy living for women.
It’s your mental as well as your physical health. Now, you obviously know that I’m not a psychologist, but I’ve got a bit of common sense, plus, I’ve had experience with my own mental health.
Your mental health is just as important as physical which is why we must fill our minds with positive and uplifting things. It’s a must!
Without anymore blabbering from me, let’s get going with this awesome list of movies.
Movies That Empower Women # 1 – The Devil Wears Prada
While I don’t like her boyfriend, I think he acts like a spoiled toddler, it gives an awesome message of never giving up on your dreams; but at the same time remembering what is important.
If you’ve never seen it, or it’s been awhile since you’ve seen it, go watch it right now. You won’t regret it.
Movies that Empower Women #2 – Wonder Woman
My number two favorite (and they are not in order of preference from here on out) is Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot.
Holy. Cow. Gal re-wrote the definition of Wonder Woman in this movie and I was enthralled from the very first minute, all the way to the credits.
She’s strong, compassionate, smart, humorous and let’s be honest, sexy.
Movies that Empower Women #3 – A League of Their Own
This one was quite interesting to me because it opened my eyes to some of the things that our foremothers went through in regards to sexism.
If you’re unfamiliar with the story- it’s about a women’s baseball league while men were off fighting in the war. People thought it was a joke and made fun of them and they had to endure quite a few obstacles; but I’m sure as you can imagine with any feel good movie, they come out on top.
Give it a watch and you won’t regret it
Movies that Empower Women #4 – Legally Blonde
This one hits close to home for me. Because I’m blonde, I’ve always been blonde, and have been the brunt of quite a few blonde jokes in my time.
Elle Woods not only is able to completely annihilate those jokes, she’s able to stay looking completely awesome the entire time.
She teaches that you can be totally yourself and not conform to what other people think you should be or what other people think you should look like and still make a difference.
Movies that Empower Women #5 – Mona Lisa Smile
The first 15 or so minutes is a bit slow, but it is absolutely worth the watch. It is set in the 1950’s where it was the epitome of stereotypes for women and being doormats.
This movie is about a college professor (Julia Roberts) who tries to break down those barriers and teach the women in her class to be their own person and don’t depend on a man to tell you who you are.
While I love my man and I am not a man hater by any means; I do believe this is an important message.
A man doesn’t define a woman; she is her own human being.
Movies that Empower Women #6 – Mulan
Those that think that Frozen was the first woman empowerment movie Disney ever made have a pretty short memory.
Frozen is great and all, but have you seen Mulan? The girl risks her life to save her father’s life and saves China in the process.
Never seen it? You’re missing out!
Movies that Empower Women #7 – Moana
Can’t say enough good things about Moana. Beside the movie being absolutely gorgeous and incredible to look at, the message behind it is awesome.
It’s a young girl that is set to take her father’s place as chief of her people but her heart longs to “sail across the sea”
Long story short, she gets her chance and saves the world. My suggestion would be to check it out for the long story. It’s amazing; plus, her voice is incredible and I like just about anything with The Rock in it.
Movies that Empower Women #8 – Miss Congeniality
While this one might not seem like an empowering movie right off the bat, it actually is.
Lucy goes against the rules, defies those that told her she was wrong and saves her newest group of friends that she never thought she would be friends with.
It’s an oldie, but a goodie.
Movies that Empower Women #9 – Brave
Merida is the epitome of a tom boy who loves her bow and arrow and her freedom.
When she is forced to choose a suitor, she pushes back and takes things into her own hands.
While learning some lessons along the way, she realizes what is most important in life and it’s not her bow and arrow, or which suitor, it’s something more important than that.
Movies that Empower Women #10- The Blind Side
She challenges stereotypes of all kinds and they become a family. Sandra Bullock has an Oscar winning performance in this movie and it’s totally awesome.
Movies that Empower Women #11 – Hidden Figures
This movie is about African American female computers at NASA when computers were actually humans and not machines.
These women in this movie face incredible odds and they are smart to boot. The women portrayed in this movie served an absolutely vital part in the NASA age and redefined history.
Movies that Empower Women #12 – Harry Potter
I’m pretty sure that I don’t need to really go through this. Have you even met Hermione Granger? And the other awesome women in this series?
Hermione saves Harry’s butt countless times, okay? Literally not even going to explain this. If you haven’t read the books or seen the movies, do it right now and you can thank me later.
Movies That Empower Women #13 & #14 – Princess Diaries 1&2
Love the Princess Diaries. The first one is hilarious and the second one is where she rebels against the law of the country that says she has to be married to be queen.
It might be a bit silly and the acting a bit corny at times, but hey, you can’t go wrong with Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway. They’re a killer combo. I mean, Julie Andrews is a queen in her own right, even if it’s not officially of a country. Oh-kay?
Like I said before, I love a good movie, and movies that are upbeat and empower women without making men look like idiots are even better.
Even if you’ve seen these movies before, taking time to watch them again and think on them would be good.
If you don’t have them, some of them are on Netflix or Prime, but a lot of them are on Amazon for super cheap as you have seen throughout this post.
You know what? Make it a night in and grab a glass of wine, take a bath and watch a good movie.
Because, why not? You work hard and deserve some down time.
