Somebody really smart once said that if you do the same thing over and over again, expecting different results, that you are insane.
While that is right in your face and you wonder if they’re just being mean or they’re serious, I’m pretty sure they’re serious. And before we get all offended, let’s think this through a minute…
Here’s what I mean…
This past week, when I was on my monthly radio show visit, I was talking with the other host and we were talking about how to get clients results that they’re looking for, the importance of periodization, etc.
She told me that she had a gal come to her that had been doing the exact same workout for years.
Not a group of workouts, the exact same workout.
This poor lady had bought one single workout from a trainer years ago and she had been doing that same workout five days a week for several years.
When she talked to the other host, she said she was confused as to why she wasn’t getting results when this was a workout that had been given to her by a professional.
Well, I’ll be honest, I felt really sorry for this poor gal and I had never even met her!
While I don’t normally have the conversation with folks that they’re doing the same exact thing over and over, I do have the conversation that they’re bored with their workouts ALL of the time!
Gals come into the gym and they are simply bored, but they have seen these exercises on Instagram and the girl doing them looked awesome, so wouldn’t that mean you should be getting results by now?
It’s time to stop doing the same boring workout routine and mix it up.
Well, let’s take an example of a mama, who has hit a plateau in her journey and she is struggling with overcoming that plateau in gaining some killer muscle.
First thing you’re going to want to do is assess your goals
You’ve hit a plateau, so it’s time to put away the routine or the workouts you’re currently doing and mix it up.
Assess your goals by writing down what you want from your fitness routine more than absolutely anything.
Is it awesome legs? How about some nice shoulder caps to make your arms look nice and strong? Lose that last bit of baby weight?
Write it all down and don’t be afraid to put it all out there.
This will let you know what you want to focus on.
Let’s take the losing the last little bit of baby weight as an example.
While we all know that calorie deficit is what is required to burn fat, killer workouts are what sculpt and shape that body into what you want.
I’m not talking doing a few bicep curls and a few lat pull downs, some crunches, and calling it a day… I’m talking about some great workouts that when you leave the gym, you’re sweating like crazy and feeling pretty dang proud of yourself.
Here’s a tip and how I do things with my gals.
A lot of my clients are gals that want to learn a new lifestyle while losing weight that they’d gained from their kiddos.
When I work with them in a client to coach relationship, we work the entire body, but in doing that, we focus on certain areas.
I have a gal that wants to sculpt her legs as her upper body is pretty strong. So, we do full body work, but focus more on the legs.
This means that we will do heavier legs, and some upper body, and then we will hit the legs again.
We still have leg focused days, and upper body focused days, but for her, we have really been focusing more on the legs and her legs are slimming down and sculpting into something “she hasn’t ever had” (quotes are hers).
It is not something that has happened overnight. It has taken real time and effort but she is getting there!
Grab a plan from a professional
Put DOWN the free workout plan that you got somewhere on Pinterest or the interwebs, because you don’t know who made that.
It literally could be some weirdo that lives in a basement and hasn’t seen the light of day in 10 years.
Make sure that you are getting a plan from a professional who knows what they’re doing.
I have 30 day instant downloads specific for the gym in my shop that are sure to shake up your workout routine. You will leave the gym each time thinking, good grief that was awesome!
Believe me, gals love them. You can grab one here.
For the love
of dumbbells, stop doing the same boring workout over and over expecting different results.
It’s time to mix up that routine and hit the gym hard with something different and new.
As we discussed, it’s important to focus on areas that you really want to work on, but working out your entire body is going to be vital.
A perfect example is my post series on how I’m overcoming Diastasis Recti naturally. While writing that series, I did my normal workout routine of periodization, upper and lower body, etc. but I sprinkled in some accessory work of focusing on that area of my abdomen that had DR.
I still lifted heavy weights, and I still ran, but my ab exercises were an important part of the routine to focus on that area that I really wanted to get stronger.
Remember, you absolutely cannot spot reduce. You just can’t, it’s scientifically proven. Unless you go pay a doc to suck the fat out of you in a certain area, you cannot spot reduce.
What you CAN do is focus on an area to make it stronger.
Bottom line? Grab a plan. Stop doing the same thing over and over again and expecting to get different results.
You’ve got this.
Just because you’ve hit a plateau does not mean all is lost. It simply means that you need a shake up in your routine and you need to get to work, but in a different way.
Your goals are attainable.
You just need the right tools to get there! Stick with me, mama, and I will take the guess work out of it for you.
It’s time to learn a new lifestyle that will get you to where you want to go. Will it be hard? Sure! Anything new is hard at first. But, once you learn, it won’t be hard. It will become habit.
