It sure seems like every time I checkout at the grocery store, there is some new magazine that is staring me in the face telling me how to “get my pre-baby body back.” Reaching fitness goals seems to be a magical unicorn somewhere that just comes and goes!
Not only that, these magazines always seem to promote some quick fix or some nasty drink made of unicorn hair and olive oil that has to be taken at exactly 2:30 am.
Okay, you get my point though, right? It’s maddening!
Everybody seems to have an opinion and none of them ever add up.
Plus, they’re telling you to “get your body back”. Where did you body go? Did your body run away?
Are you simply a blob of nerves and eyeballs?
Because, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be able to scroll through this crazy woman’s post if your body had left because your thumb is part of your body.
Let’s be clear about something…
Your body may look different, but it never left.
You know what else?
There are ways to help you reach your goals that don’t include random and nasty drinks, quick fixes, boring workouts, and jumping from one thing to the next.
While this may be shocking, sticking with the basics is the best way to reach your goals that will last long term.
What do I mean by the basics? Well, let’s dive in.
Top three basics that will help you not only reach your goals, but maintain them.
When we have our littles, our bodies take quite a beating, not matter how ‘easy’ the pregnancy was. Plus, like it or not, we are going to gain weight and there is a very high chance that we will gain fat as well.
So when we have our babies and we decide that there are things we would like to fix, there’s nothing wrong with that.
And keeping with the basics and keeping it simple is the best way to not only reach your goals, but maintain them.
Keeping with the fitness basics #1 – Make small decisions everyday
Small decisions, every single day will lead up to big results in reaching fitness goals.
Don’t believe me? Well, let’s think about what I call “piece snacking” throughout the day.
A little bite here, a little bite there, absentmindedly eating, and not making a conscious decision about it. Those calories add up pretty quickly!
But at the time, you’re not thinking about it because it’s so small, right?
Same goes for your healthy lifestyle and post baby weight loss journey. Those small decisions of going for a 30 minute workout, putting the littles in the stroller and walking around the block, changing the bread out on a sandwich for a huge piece of lettuce… those small decisions will add up and get you to where you’re wanting to go.
Things that seem insignificant will honestly end up having the most impact in your life.
Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s NOTHING wrong with bread. But, I think you get my point. ?
Keeping with the fitness basics #2 – Grab a plan by a professional
We don’t know who made that or if they even have the credentials to make such a thing. Because, guess what? It could be some random person that lives in their mama’s basement that hasn’t seen the light of day in 10 years.
Investing in this journey and grabbing a plan from a professional is one of the most important things you can do.
Also, make sure the person is actually a professional. It kills me to see how many people on Instagram get taken advantage of from people that claim to be professionals when they actually aren’t.
And while nobody can guarantee results, check the credentials and what they ‘preach’. Are they preaching weird drinks and quick fixes? Then you probably don’t want to stick around with them.
If there’s a freebie offered by the professional, they hey, you do you and go for it if you want. But if you don’t know for sure? Then run the other way!
The basics and keeping it simple in reaching fitness goals always wins out.
Because, guess what? Solid studies that are done by scientists and doctors who know what they’re doing often have a common denominator that goes back to keeping with the basics.
The basics of weight loss?
- Solid workout plan
- Calorie deficit/calorie periodization
- Exit strategy once the goal weight is reached and keeping with a solid workout plan
That is weight loss broken down into the basics. You’ll notice that there are no weird drinks or quick fixes.
It takes time, effort, and commitment.
I have 30 day instantly downloadable plans that you can look at here that are made for high calorie burning and helping women get stronger and more confident.
Keeping with the fitness basics # 3 – Calorie Deficit/Calorie Periodization/Exit Strategy
Okay, now, this one is often what trips people up.
When I was a young and dumb trainer, I would say things like “diet’s don’t work”. When in actuality, what I was trying to say, but I said it poorly, people don’t have a strategy for after the diet.
Let me explain.
To lose fat, our bodies must be in a calorie deficit. How you go into that deficit is your choice.
YOU are the master of your body and YOU have to decide what you’re going to eat and how you will eat it, but the scientific fact of having to be in a calorie deficit remains the same.
You must be in a calorie deficit to lose fat.
So, that’s why diet’s work, right? They put you in a calorie deficit. So, what happens if you have a lot of weight to lose but you seem to plateau? Well, that’s where calorie and workout periodization come in which you can read more about here.
But what happens after the diet? Why do people seem to often gain the weight back? It’s because the don’t have a strategy for after the diet.
You see, when your body’s metabolism will adjust to how much you’re eating.
So, if you go straight back to maintenance calories without a gradual climb, often times, people will gain the weight back.
A slow climb in calories is vital to ensuring that you keep your results, mama. This is why counting calories is so important! It’s not scary, it’s actually pretty simple and empowering because you know exactly what you’re eating and how much of it.
Honestly, mama that is it. Those are the fitness basics that will get you re-started on this journey.
It’s interesting, because often times mamas will dive head first into their postpartum journeys very soon after having baby, but then they plateau and they seem to fall off track.
This means that it’s time to take charge again.
Start by unfollowing people on Instagram that make you feel like you’re not pretty enough, good enough, or whatever the case.
Your body never left, it is still right there, you simply want to make changes to it and that’s perfectly okay. You have the right to do so.
Is it hard to do it slow and the right way? You bet. I’m not going to lie to you. It’s hard work and sometimes you’re going to wonder if you’re even getting anywhere.
But, guess what?
You ARE. Those small seemingly insignificant steps? They’re adding up. One day you’re going to look in the mirror and say “Oh my gosh, I see it.”
Or your pre-pregnancy jeans are going to zip up without a small dance and weird yoga poses to get into them and you’re going to do a dance of victory.
You’ve totally got this. Don’t ever give up in reaching your fitness goals! And stick with me, mama so I can help take the guess work out of this journey for you.
