Alright, girls. Perfect sports bra here we go. Grab yourself a cup of coffee because we’re about to have some girl talk. It’s time to hang up your preconceived notions about what a sports bra should or shouldn’t be because we are starting from scratch.
First, I hate shopping for bras, let it be made known. Second, I hate even MORE shopping for bras in the store. Especially when there are folks all up in ya business. Feel me? Kay, so we’re now in the safe zone of talking about how to find the perfect sports bra and how to find it online.
I had a baby a year ago and within the past two years the boobies have been through some bras. KnowwhatImean? (yes, that’s supposed to be one word, just say it fast).
First thing is first: from this point on in the post, “girls” will be referring to the boobs. Mkay?
Second! This post will be laid as follows:
- Know Your Bra Size
- Category 1: The Smaller Girls
- Category 2: Bigger Girls (either natural or enhanced ranging from C-DD)
- Category 3: All Girls Post Breastfeeding/Pregnancy OR DD-DDD.
- Category 4: Larger than DDD
One rule that applies to every single category of girls is – go for quality. If you want a good bra, you will have to pay for it. It stinks, but it’s the way of the world unfortunately.
Know Your Bra Size
Even if you think you know your bra size already, something I have learned is that the girls can change sizes and shapes. It’s always better to give it a check!
To know what size of sports bra to get online, you will need to know your regular bra size. If you do not know your bra size, you can figure it out at home! This has taken quite some trial and error to figure out, but you’re about to benefit from some random conversations I’ve had and a lot of headaches trying to figure it out but here is what I’ve come up with.
My girls have quite literally gone from an A to a DDD and deflated again just because of having a baby so, needless to say, I’ve tried on a bra or two. Sometimes it’s easiest to measure with a friend but it is absolutely possible to do by yourself. Grab a soft measuring tape (not what you find in the hub’s tool box) and let’s get crackin’.
Now that you know your bra size, you can actually shop online for your sports bra and skip the awkward dressing room situation. Maybe I’m the only one that feels awkward in department store dressing rooms. Oh well!
So… which bra do you get?
Category 1: The Smaller Girls
(Approximate A-B Size)
Something to remember: just because you have smaller girls does not mean that you do not need support. Here’s what I mean. When women workout, something happens to the *ahem* nipple which causes it to restrict and be pointy. Why? I have no idea, I’m not a scientist but I do know it’s a fact. No matter the size of the girl, if there is not proper support and coverage, everyone around you will get a view of, well, everything.
We don’t want that. Below is a bra from Under Armour that you can pick up on Amazon. I absolutely love Under Armour products because they are always high quality and last very well. The reason I chose this bra for this category is this: it is for medium impact exercises which would work great for the smaller girls. It provides the coverage needed while keeping everyone under control. Size chart is about mid-way down the Amazon page.
Category 2: Bigger Girls
(Approximate C-DD Cup Size)
Once the girls reach the C cup area I would consider them fairly large and this may have happened naturally or it was paid for. Either way works, I don’t judge 🙂
Let’s talk about the bounce and why that’s a no-no.
- Too much bounce could actually hurt you. If you’re getting slapped in the face while you’re working out, it’s time for a new bra and one with some good support.
- Premature sagging. If you allow your girls to fly all over the place without proper support it will cause them to sag prematurely. How do I know this? Well, I’ve had girls tell me that they’ve noticed it happening and plus it makes sense, right? The skin is only highly elastic for so long due to
- Aging. So when that skin is put under unnecessary strain, it causes it to wear out quicker. Let’s take the example of a hair tie. We all know that our hair ties stretch out and the heavier the hair, the faster it stretches. Same goes for your skin!
- It’s distracting to you and others. Whether you run, do Crossfit, yoga, or workout in a regular gym, or wherever you go; the goal is to focus on you, not to draw attention to yourself. You don’t want to be constantly putting the girls back in their assigned seats. So, let’s keep it classy, ladies and make sure the girls are under control.
The below bra is also a bra that is made by Under Armour that you can pick up on Amazon. I’ve had a bra like this and it is amazing. It has two cups and full coverage. Plus, on top of having the T-back, it has a hook in the back for extra support. Absolutely fantastic.

My gals in this category, I’m here with you. I’ve been in the others but here is my current situation and finding a sports bra to work for me with my high intensity workouts has been a challenge!
Pro tip- if your girls clap for you while you workout… Just no. It’s not okay. Been there, done that.
It’s time to assign the girls their seats. Ready? Let’s go.
If you are in this category you’ve probably been through quite a time trying to find a good Sports Bra. Here’s the style that I really like the best for our situation. We deserve a great bra that keeps the girls in their seats for the duration of the workout ride. There’s nothing like putting a disgruntled passenger back in her respected seat in the middle of the gym. It’s just awkward.
You will need full coverage at minimum, but support is huge here and if you’re in this category, double support is better.
My favorite bra is from LuLuLemon. The Enlite Bra, this bra will tie those girls down and hold them in place.
The fabric is so soft and it’s breathable. It hooks in the back and has a nice strappy back.
I can literally jump up and down and the girls do not move, plus, I can still breathe.
My training regimen is tough and it puts a strain on my bras, but these babies handle it like a champ.
Here’s the only downside- it’s expensive. But it’s worth the expense, especially if your girls tend to be give you trouble during your workouts.
Category 4: Higher than DDD
I have a friend whom I asked for her recommendations as she is currently, well, blessed. How’s that? Her name is Molly, take a look at what she has to say: (you can take a closer look at these bras by clicking on the links or the pictures!)
“I’m Molly and I’m currently wearing a 34G and have had larger breasts my entire life, so I know the struggle of trying to restrain the girls while being active. After much research and trial and error, I have two recommendations:
Bra Number 1: I currently wear while running 3-4 times a week.
This bra is amazing. It is:
- Comfortable for long-term wear
- Traditional-looking (important when you want to wear it without a shirt)
- Secure – the band has FIVE clasps
- Inexpensive ($30-$40)
- Adjustable for high/low impact activities
There’s just one downside: the girls are squished together. There is no separation, which is very…. sweaty, and can lead to a small rub sore after many hours in the heat.
Bra Number 2: I wore for many years doing martial arts and kickboxing, and solves the separation issue while still providing good support. However, it does have some downsides, which eventually led me to Bra choice 1, which is my first choice.
- Good separation
- Can clip straps together, which helps with high impact
- Good moisture resistant material
- Expensive ($70-$90)
- Underwire becomes uncomfortable long term
- Looks like a regular bra when on – I felt uncomfortable wearing it without a top”

So let’s have a quick re-cap shall we?
First thing, no matter the size of your girls is quality. As with all workout clothes, quality really should be at the top of your list. Don’t just go pick up some no name bra and head to the gym. That could spell disaster with either an uninvited nipple situation or your own cheering section of two clapping for you as you’re killing your workout.
Secondly, remember that you can actually change bra sizes because of body composition change, fat loss, etc. This said, be sure to check your size each time before you purchase a bra!
Last but not least, be comfortable. If you’re uncomfortable in your bra, your workout won’t be as effective. It just won’t. So. That said, invest in yourself and your assets that aren’t going anywhere. It will not only make your workouts more enjoyable, you’ll have more confidence with not having to worry about wardrobe malfunctions.
