For those of you that haven’t noticed, I’m a blonde haired green eyed gal and my natural skin color would have the Ghost Busters all up in my house. KnowwhatImean? To that end, when I was younger I had some very unhealthy sun habits that I’m still paying for. However, I wanted to be tan and it took me a long time to find Skinny Tan and I went through quite the drama to get finally find a selfless tanner that wasn’t streaky, splotchy or the dreaded color of a carrot. I like to eat carrots not be a carrot.
On the flip side of my ghostly appearance, I have darker skinned ancestors (if you’ve never looked into your ancestry, you should, I learned some very cool things) that have make it extremely easy for me to get a tan. When I was younger I thought it was awesome how I could go from being so pale that you would need eye protection to an awesome coppery/reddish tan that made people jealous.
I would spend hours outside during the summer using tanning oils, minimal sunscreen PLUS spending time in a tanning bed. To say that I had an unhealthy relationship with the sun is an understatement, but hey, I was tan and that’s all that mattered, right? My parents would always get after me about protecting my skin but as any good child does, I didn’t want to listen. (someone hear my sarcasm, please)
But I had a tan that made people jealous that’s what mattered, right?
That is until I noticed a mole on my stomach that was growing and getting darker. I made an appointment with my doctor not thinking anything would come of it. Well, they weren’t ‘okay’. That was a few years ago, and just this very week at my mole check, they found two more that need removing and testing. I haven’t been in a tanning bed in over 4 years and I’m still paying for those unhealthy habits. Please hear me when I beg you and say to cancel your tanning bed membership, wear good sunscreen and a hat, and grab a sunless tanner instead.
Okay! So after my initial bad mole appointment, it was time to put my lab coat on and pretend to be a scientist while I found the best sunless tanner. I’m sure it’s fairly pointless in me saying that there were several that I tried that had me soaking in the tub with my sugar scrub and wash cloth buffing it off having a small panic attack. Yikes.
Funny story first…
The timeline of this experiment spans the length of around 6-9 months maybe even a year, I lost count actually. During this time, I went to get a pedicure and my feet were all kinds of splotchy and weird looking because I had not gotten around to buffing off one of the bad sunless tanners I had tried. The gal doing my pedicure looks at me and goes “is that a sunless tanner?” I was like yeah don’t judge me, I’m trying to find the right one and this obviously isn’t it. She totally judged. Oh well, good thing I’m not easily offended!
I’m telling you this so that way you do not have to do the experimenting of the tanners for yourself. Because, some of the tanners I tried, I literally couldn’t get off. I about panicked on a few. Sometimes I literally made my skin red trying to get some of these tanners off.
Anyway! So which tanner should you get?
Simple. Skinny Tan, which can be found on Amazon. Why? Because I have literally tried everything from the cheapest $3 spray from a can that you find at a super market, to a lotion that won’t come off, to expensive salon spray tans (like $50 for one application) to finally finding Skinny Tan mousse. Why did I choose the mousse? Well, I feel that mousse spreads more evenly which makes for a better tan. It soaks right in and dries quickly.
I am a huge component of doing things the natural way. Which is another reason I had this tanner on my list for experimenting.
First thing that I love about Skinny Tan is that there is no DHA which according to MedicineNet is a chemical that interacts with your skin to change the color of it. I personally have found that the tanners with DHA, although effective can cause the sunless tan to fade unevenly. Ironically enough, this exact topic is discussed on the Skinny Tan Website. I prefer no chemicals on my skin which I’m sure that you do too.
The product also includes Guarana which according to studies has been shown to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Which SURPRISE! pretty much all of us have it. It is literally a part of life, nothing to be ashamed of, but if we don’t like the way it looks, everything looks better with a tan. 🙂 Below is pulled directly from their website regarding ingredients (note the quotes that these are their words):
“What is a natural tanning agent?
Most ordinary tanners work with the chemical DHA that has been found to dry the skin or cause it to become patchy. Skinny Tan products use a natural tanning agent derived from the seeds of the Brassica napus plant instead. The active ingredient works naturally with the amino acids in the skin to create the darkening reaction for a natural-looking tan.
What is Guarana?
Skinny Tan includes Guarana, a caffeine derivative that is an important ingredient in the most popular firming and cellulite creams. It is Guarana’s high caffeine content that can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Also, tanned cellulite always looks better than white cellulite; so, by tanning with Skinny Tan, you get the double benefit with one application. As we say at Skinny Tan: if you can’t tone it – tan it!”
Alright! I think we have ingredients covered. Let’s move onto the Pros and Cons
Nobody has time to sit and wait for a spray tan to dry. Quite literally no one. You’ve got things to do! However! Even if you’re the top gal in your office, you have to take time for yourself. I always feel better about myself with my skin has a bit of a tan to it and I was stunned at how fast the mouse dries and am able to get dressed comfortably in less than 10 minutes.
When you’re applying Skinny Tan, it can very easily be seen where you’ve missed. Those are my legs and that is literally 60 seconds after applying the mousse on my right leg.
You can see that my left leg has splotches and weird skin unevenness, and my right leg is more smooth. My legs have not been photo shopped in this photo, this is 100% legitimate, sister. Don’t look at my feet, I obviously need a pedicure again and so there’s your proof that this picture is real!
This is an extremely affordable tanner. You can grab it on Amazon for around $17 and I have gotten 5 applications out of a bottle!
Bonus! The product does not stink. Can I get a hallelujah and amen? How many self-tanning products smell absolutely rancid? Don’t even think about sweating while using those other products because you will smell like a weird corn chip or something. Believe me, I know.
Pro Tip- Grab a mitt, you don’t want to put this on with your hands.
To be fair, I’m not sure if it’s me, or if it’s all tanning products, however, my feet are a little off, so I will go back and adjust there. Also my hands tend to turn way darker
than my arms, so I have to adjust the product there. The bottle is a bit smaller than I pictured. However, you should still get 4-5 applications out of the bottle.
That really is it when it comes to negatives in my opinion on this product. I only promote products I 100% believe in and this is one that I absolutely love.
“What if I don’t like it?”
No problem! If you’re a Prime Member with Amazon and order it through Amazon, you can return it within 30 days.
I know that everyone’s fear is the orange streaky mess. Believe me, I get it. I personally know the orange streaky mess. Remember the panic attack in the bathtub because I was the color of our lovely carrots and I couldn’t get it off? Yeah… It wasn’t from this product that’s FOR SURE.
This has been quite a project trying all of these different products and finally finding one that I believe can be used by all my girls needing some sun kissed skin in her life without the actual kiss of the sun. I still have a bit of learning to do in regards to application because, like I said, my hands and feet can be a bit janky. I’m also super impatient too so taking the time to get in between each of my fingers, toes, and knuckles takes a bit of effort!
One more thing…. Do me a favor, sister. Whether you grab Skinny Tan or you decide to go on your own journey to find a sunless tanner that works for you… Don’t get back in the tanning bed. Just don’t do it. It’s not worth the chance of a doctor telling you that you have spots on your skin that need attention.
When you’re in the sun? Grab an SPF of 30 or more and wear a wide brimmed hat.
So there you have it. Your perfect tan not only is cheap and made of natural ingredients, it will give you an extra pep in your step which, is worth way more than the seventeenish dollars you pay for it.
