Summer is almost upon us, and with that comes the itch to get out and about to go and do. While I firmly believe that we should not be annoying fitness people on vacation, I do know, at least for me, that there are certain places I enjoy going more than others based on my level of activity! Which is why I created this list of vacation spots for fitness girls (and their significant others! 🙂
I will say that I’ve never been to Europe although it is on my list for the next 5 years, so all of these spots will be within the United States or Caribbean.
While this post may seem to be a bit out of the ordinary for a health a fitness blog, I firmly believe that part of healthy living is a balance of work, fun, workouts, rest, and adventure.
Another thing that you might be wondering is why this post is specific to “vacation spots for fitness girls”. Well, it’s the same with anything, right? There are places that some people enjoy more than others. Just like we like to work out and reach those awesome fitness goals, there are others who aren’t into that kind of thing.
Same goes with vacation spots. I think that this mix of places has just the right amount of activity to keep us moving, real food to eat, and enough options for relaxation for the perfect balance.
Taking Vacations are so important
We need to get out of our work rut and go see this great big world. In full transparency, I turn 30 this year. It literally seems like yesterday I turned 20 & felt like I had my entire life in front of me.
While I am by no means old, I have learned over the past ten years that we need to quit taking ourselves so dang seriously and embrace life and live it like we won’t be here in ten years.
One more thing before we get into the list, I also understand that vacationing can get expensive! Have you ever heard of Next Vacay?
Honestly, I hadn’t either until recently and I have friends that have used it. I know a girl personally that went to Spain for $350 round trip flight. Whaaaaaaaattttt????? I know, right? Crazy prices.
So, that said, go check them out and see what you think!
Vacation Spots for Fitness Girls #1 – Jump on a Boat and Go on a Cruise
A CRUISE. So. Much. Yes. If you’ve never been on a cruise, you’re in for a treat. I have been on 4 at this point in my life.
Now before you think I’m some sort of snob, allow me to explain something. Cruises are (in my opinion) the most affordable method of vacationing. You can go on a cruise as a couple and get a nice room for an affordable price. Plus your food is all included.
Not only is your food included, it’s real quality food. There are however, places on the boat that are a bit more fancy and up scale that you have to pay extra for, but for this southern girl, the dining room is fancy enough for my taste and I love it!
Alcohol is not included in the price, but considering my drinking escapades are kept to a bare minimum, that doesn’t really affect me. However, I thought you’d like to know so you can keep that in mind!
I have gone mainly on seven day cruises and one four day cruise. The seven day cruises are the best ones because you stop at all of these different places. I have gotten to see places I would have never been able to see, because our cruise ship docked there.
On these giant ships, they have all kinds of activities to do that include (but aren’t limited to), spa treatments, casinos, gyms, multiple pools, recreational games, and of course a bazillion lounge chairs to take naps on the deck. Just remember to wear your sunscreen!
Listen. Can you hear that? A giant boat is calling your name.
Vacation Spots for Fitness Girls #2-Orlando
No, Orlando is not just for small children. So, don’t even think about rolling your eyes at me! J
There is so much to do in Orlando it will make your head literally spin. My guess is that if you’re headed to Orlando, you’re going to want to make pit stops or camp for that matter, at the two huge parks there which are Walt Disney World and Harry Potter World (Universal Studios). (I do not own either of those names nor am I associated with them in anyway). Those links are their websites and I recommend working directly through them as they are so helpful in helping you plan your time there.
You tell them what you like to do, and they help you plan!
Another cool thing about Orlando is that if you want to make a beach day, the drive to the nearest beach is about an hour.
It’s a great mix of things to do and I don’t have the space in this tiny blurb to get it all in! However, I will say that Orlando has great night life spots, real food restaurants, and lots of activity or rest time locations.
Vacation Spots for Fitness Girls #3 -New York City
Gertrude Stein said “America is my country – and Paris my hometown”. For me, it’s “America is my country – and New York City is my hometown”. I absolutely love the Big Apple.
My sister lived there for several years and I would go see her as often as I could. I lost count of how many times I went, that’s how much I loved it. Every time that I went, we would get out and explore the city and to be honest, I don’t think we ever saw the same thing twice even though we were in the same place.
This amazing city is always moving and shaking.
Yes, NYC can be expensive, but to be honest, there are so many things that you can go and see and do that are either free or do not cost much. Not the least of which is a good run through central park!
If you go at Christmas, the entire city is decked out in Christmas décor and it’s freezing, which adds to the Christmas spirit. You will however, need to go in and out of shops and things to stay warm!
However, if you go in the spring, the blooms, flower stands and perfect weather make for a much more pleasant walking around experience. There are food festivals, amazing shopping, and believe it or not, beaches!
When you go, I recommend paying the extra to be able to stay in Manhattan. It’s in the middle of the hustle and bustle and easier to get around. Also! I recommend the subway, because it’s very cost effective and quick! If those taxi drivers get a whiff of the fact that you’re a tourist, they will try to rip you off!
Case and point, when I was leaving one time to come home, a taxi driver started to take the long way to JFK, and I told him to not go that way to go a different way because it’s shorter and he stumbled over himself talking about how he thought I was a tourist, etc. Sooooo… There’s that.
Last thing- make sure you go to Little Italy when you go. They have some of the most amazing restaurants and the vibe is incredible. You’ll love it, it’s definitely an adventure. You definitely won’t have to worry about getting your steps in while you’re in NYC!
Vacation Spots for Fitness Girls #4 – Skiing in Colorado
Talk about getting your exercise in while you’re gone. Skiing will make you hurt in places you didn’t even know you had!
I’m not a cold weather person by any stretch, but there’s something about being in a cold place surrounded by mountains and cozied up to the fire.
There is however, a small downside to skiing besides it being a bit dangerous! It can be expensive. So this maybe a trip where you and the hubs grab some friends and go rent a cabin or something.

Vacation Spots for Fitness Girls #5 -Laying on the Beach for a Week
Sometimes we need a week to just get away, put the phones down, and relax. While all of the above places are amazing and so much fun, there are times that you can make your vacation so busy that you need a vacation from your vacation!
Keeping a good balance of going on adventures as well as more relaxing vacations is vital to our health and well-being!
We recently went to Miramar Beach in Florida and spent seven days of playing and resting on the beach. It was super low key. We slept on the beach under the umbrella, went swimming in the sea, and ate great food.
To be honest we didn’t do a whole lot else because we so desperately needed a vacation that was all rest. Which is exactly what we got.
There are also amazing resorts in the Caribbean like Sandals where you can be as fancy or as non-fancy as you’d like.
As always when out in the sun, protect your skin. Please for the love of dumbbells protect your skin from the sun. Obviously I’m not saying to live in a cave, but I am saying to protect yourself!
Who is itching to hop on a plane right now?
I know I am. I’m actually sitting in a coffee shop right now as I write this and watching the cars go by on the street outside the window and it’s taken me longer than normal to write this post because I’ve been day dreaming about going on one of these trips!
Whether you decide to go Orlando and run around the parks, or you hop on a boat and cruise the deep blue sea, or jump on the New York City subway, the main message is this:
Don’t take yourself so seriously. Yes, I know you have fitness goals you want to meet and I can help you get there. At the same time, if all we worry about is reaching goals and forget to enjoy the journey to those goals, we’ve missed the boat. Yep, pun intended. So whether you’re reading this sitting at your desk day dreaming about sand between your toes, or you’re on the stair master trying to pass the time; take a good look at yourself in the mirror and ask, am I balancing well?
Do I have a good balance of work, play, workouts, rest, and adventure? If the answer is no, maybe ask yourself why?
We’ve all heard “we only had one life to live, live it to the fullest”. Living life to the fullest is about thriving in this life, not simply surviving.
Work hard, but rest hard as well; and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and go on an adventure.
