Have you ever been scrolling through Pinterest and you come across this really spammy looking pin that is like “hey, take this magic pill of unicorn hair and olive oil to lose 30 pounds in 2 weeks”. Then for a second you think, is this the answer? And you feel super discouraged thinking “why am I not losing weight?”
Why am I stuck??
Girl. Stop right there. The gist of this entire post can be found in the very next sentence.
You do not need supplements or fat burning pills or some magic pill found behind a spammy Pin of a cartoon girl holding her stomach.
But why are you stuck?
There could be many different reasons, but we’re going to go through my top five that I have found in my experience for reasons gals get stuck in their weight loss journey
Why Am I Not Losing Weight Possibility #1- Improper Counting of Calories
First, when you’re on your weight loss journey, you absolutely, positively cannot guess your caloric intake.
You’d be amazed at how quickly calories add up.
Here’s a real life story for you. One of my clients will we telling me she was eating “no more than 1500 (which is a deficit for her) calories per day”. And she came to me and said hey. The scale isn’t moving.
Why am I not losing weight?
I said, “Well, you’re probably not actually eating 1500 calories.”
And she said “No, really! I am! And I said, are you tracking with an app?“
She said no. And I said “Okay, download MyFitnessPal and count every single thing you put in your mouth for the next 5 days.”
5 days later…
We revisited this conversation and sure enough, she had been eating almost 2500 calories per day! That was 1,000 over her goal!
She was stunned. So, we adjusted her calories based on her needs and sure enough, she started dropping weight.
Am I saying 1500 calories is the magic calorie number? No! Every single person is different. You need to know your own numbers which you can figure by going to TDEE.
Why Am I Not Losing Weight Possibility #2- Lack of a Workout Plan
This means that you don’t have a solid workout plan in place. One that will challenge you, strengthen you, and will vary in movements.
If you’re going to the gym just Willy Nilly and doing whatever you feel like doing; or watching somebody else in the gym and then copying what they’re doing; you’re not going to get anywhere very fast.
I’m also not talking about some free random Pinterest pin you found online either. How can you know that the person who created that pin isn’t living in his mama’s basement and hasn’t seen the light of day in 15 years?
Lord help us…
You’ll be glad you did.
Why Am I Not Losing Weight Possibility #3 – You’re Too Stressed
This one actually ties in with number one. The stress hormone in our bodies is called cortisol and while cortisol in small amounts is a good thing because it helps burn calories. (It is produced when you’re working out in the gym). Too much cortisol can lead to cravings which can lead to binge eating or overeating.
Which is why it’s SO important to count your calories. Both during weight loss and maintain phase.
Because, when you’re having cravings, which, is what too much cortisol can do, it can turn into either stress eating, or little bites of things here and there that add up to way more than you thought!
Why Am I Not Losing Weight Possibility #4- NEAT Levels are Low
Wait, what? What is NEAT? My house sure isn’t neat. No, no. Follow the bouncing ball with me.
NEAT stands for non-exercise activity thermogenesis.
To which you probably say, “yeah, that doesn’t help. Try again”.
Basically? Get your butt moving. I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 100 times, I’ll say it a million more….
Get your butt moving.
Have you ever heard of a step goal? Of course you have. That is basically what NEAT is. It’s a non-exercise goal.
Healthy living does not begin and end in the gym. Your healthy lifestyle incorporates every single thing you do.
You are not meant to go to the gym and have this crazy hard workout, then come home and sit on your butt for the rest of the day. Even with having kiddos and working, you’d probably be surprise at how little steps you get during the day.
Example- I work with clients in a gym and have a 3 year old. But I still have to really work to get between 8000-10000 steps per day.
Sometimes I will write entire blog posts while walking on the treadmills simple to get my steps in and my NEAT levels up.
Get your steps in.
Your body is meant to move! Increasing your NEAT levels, will really help increase your fat loss.
Why Am I Not Losing Weight Possibility #5- Lack of Quality Sleep
Last, but absolutely not least is that you might have lack of quality sleep.
Having young kiddos, I know how hard it is to get quality sleep. BELIEVE ME I know how hard it is. My child didn’t sleep for the first 2+ years of his life.
I totally get it.
There were days that I was so sleep deprived that I had to nap with him. Both morning AND afternoon.
It is what it is, right?
Start by really working to get yourself and your family on a bedtime routine. We are meant to sleep at night and we are not meant to work around the clock.
I’m looking at you, mama who thinks she has to wash every single dish every single day after her kiddos go to bed; then get up before dawn’s crack shows her bright rays the next morning.
Slow down and get some rest.
Believe me when I say I’m totally talking to myself on this, too! I have to really work on getting a proper bedtime routine in and getting quality sleep.
Because my days start between 4 and 5AM and I go to bed between 9 and 10PM at night. So, my sleep has to be top notch to stay healthy and strong.
Why do I tell you that? So that you know you’re not alone.
Over my experience as a trainer and coach, these are the top five reasons that I have found where gals get stuck in their weight loss journey.
- They’re eating more calories than they realize
- They don’t have a solid workout plan in place
- They’re stressed to the max
- Their NEAT levels are low
- Their sleep is poor
Are these the only things? No, and remember, I’m not a doctor, I’m just sharing information that I have learned through my experience.
Here’s the beauty, but also the hard part of a healthy lifestyle:
Every single woman is different and every single woman has to learn their body and what will work for them.
You can totally do this. If you’re stuck in a weight loss plateau, really evaluate each of these five areas in your journey and give any adjustments time to adjust.
